LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy in Long Beach & Lakewood, CA
If you’ve ever sat across from a therapist and had to explain what “non-binary” means, or felt like you couldn’t talk about your same-sex partner without judgment, or worried that your therapist secretly thinks you just need to pray harder—you know why truly affirming therapy matters.
You deserve therapy that celebrates who you are—not therapy that tries to change you. Whether you’re navigating identity, processing discrimination, healing from rejection, or simply need support for anxiety, depression, or life challenges, you deserve a therapist who truly gets it.
At Hygieia Behavioral Health Foundation, we provide affirming, identity-centered therapy for LGBTQ+ individuals, couples, and families in Long Beach, Lakewood, and throughout California. Our therapists, under the clinical leadership of Dr. Sade Thompson, Doctor of Psychology and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, understand the unique mental health challenges facing the queer community, and we create safe spaces where you can be fully yourself. We offer in-person sessions at our Long Beach and Lakewood offices, and virtual therapy throughout California.

Why LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy Matters
Being LGBTQ+ isn’t a mental health issue—but living in a world that doesn’t always affirm your identity absolutely can impact your mental health. You might face:
- External Challenges:
- Discrimination and prejudice in daily life
- Family rejection or conditional acceptance (“we love you but…”)
- Workplace hostility, microaggressions, or lack of protections
- Religious trauma from non-affirming faith communities
- Lack of legal protections in some states
- Violence, harassment, and threats to physical safety
- Erasure and invisibility (especially for bi+, trans, ace, and non-binary folks)
- Internal Struggles:
- Internalized homophobia, biphobia, or transphobia
- Shame about your identity or who you love
- Identity confusion, questioning, or exploration
- Coming out anxiety (or deciding whether/when/how to come out)
- Navigating multiple intersecting identities (race, disability, class, religion)
- Isolation and loneliness, especially without LGBTQ+ community
- Mental Health Impacts:
LGBTQ+ individuals experience significantly higher rates of: - Anxiety and depression - Suicidal ideation and attempts - Substance use and addiction - Trauma and PTSD (from discrimination, violence, or rejection) - Eating disorders - Self-harm
You deserve care that understands this context and doesn’t make you explain why these things matter.
What Makes Therapy “Affirming”?
Affirming therapy means:
✓ Your identity is celebrated, not questioned - No conversion therapy, no “have you considered you might just be confused,” no “both sides” on your right to exist
✓ Therapists understand LGBTQ+ experiences - No need to educate your therapist about basic queer issues, terminology, or community dynamics
✓ Intersectionality is honored - Your race, ethnicity, class, disability, immigration status, religion, and other identities matter and are integrated into your care
✓ Pronouns and names are respected - From the first contact, always, without making it a big deal
✓ Safety is prioritized - Therapists understand unique safety concerns around coming out, medical transition, legal protections, and family dynamics
✓ Relationships are validated - Your partnerships, chosen family, and relationship structures (polyamory, non-monogamy, etc.) are honored
Affirming therapy isn’t just about tolerance—it’s about truly seeing, understanding, and celebrating all of who you are.

Our Approach to LGBTQ+ Therapy
Identity-Centered Care
We start from the foundation that your LGBTQ+ identity is a source of strength, resilience, and beauty—not something to “overcome” or “cope with.” Your queerness isn’t a problem; stigma and discrimination are the problems.
Minority Stress Framework
We understand that mental health challenges often stem from living in a heteronormative, cisnormative world—not from your identity itself. Minority stress recognizes the cumulative impact of discrimination, rejection, and having to hide or defend who you are.
Trauma-Informed Practice
Many LGBTQ+ individuals have experienced trauma related to their identity—bullying, violence, rejection, conversion therapy attempts, or religious abuse. We provide gentle, trauma-informed support for healing at your own pace.
Intersectional Lens
We recognize that being LGBTQ+ intersects with other identities (race, ethnicity, disability, class, immigration status, religion). Your whole self matters here, and we understand how systems of oppression interact and compound.
Community Connection
We can connect you with LGBTQ+ resources, support groups, pride organizations, and community in Long Beach, Los Angeles, and throughout California.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are all your therapists LGBTQ+?
Some are, some aren’t—but all our therapists providing LGBTQ+ affirming care have specialized training, ongoing education, and a genuine commitment to queer-affirming practice. Many have years of experience working specifically with LGBTQ+ clients.
Can you provide letters for hormone therapy or surgery?
Yes, our licensed therapists can provide letters for gender-affirming medical care (HRT, top surgery, bottom surgery, etc.) when clinically appropriate. This is part of the comprehensive support we offer to trans and non-binary clients.
What if I’m not sure about my identity yet
That’s completely okay and actually very common. Therapy is a safe space to explore without pressure to label yourself, commit to any particular identity, or have everything figured out. You can try on different labels, change your mind, or decide labels don’t work for you at all.
Will you tell my parents I’m LGBTQ+?
No. For minors, we maintain confidentiality around identity exploration and sexual orientation unless there’s a safety concern (risk of harm to self or others). We’ll discuss confidentiality limits clearly in your first session so you know exactly what’s private and what isn’t.
Do you work with LGBTQ+ couples?
Yes! We provide affirming couples therapy for queer partnerships of all kinds—same-sex couples, trans/cis partnerships, polyamorous relationships, and more.
Can I see a therapist who shares my specific identity?
We’ll do our best to match you with a therapist whose identity, experience, and expertise align with your preferences and needs. Just let us know during scheduling what matters to you in a therapist match.
What if I’ve had bad experiences with therapists before who weren’t affirming?
Unfortunately, many LGBTQ+ folks have encountered therapists who weren’t truly affirming, asked invasive questions, or made them feel like their identity was a problem to solve. We’re committed to being different. If something doesn’t feel right or affirming, please tell us immediately so we can address it.
Can I do therapy online if I’m not near Long Beach or Lakewood
Yes! We offer virtual therapy throughout California, which can be especially helpful if you don’t have access to affirming care where you live.
You Belong Here
