Overcoming Barriers to Mental Healthcare Access in America
The barriers to mental healthcare access are significant issues facing many Americans. More than half of adults with mental illness in the U.S. do not receive mental healthcare treatment. Common barriers to mental health care access include limited availability and affordability of mental health care services, insufficient mental health care policies, lack of education about mental illness, and stigma.
Financial Barriers to Mental Health Care Despite Insurance Coverage
Even after the Affordable Care Act mandated that medical insurers cover behavioral and mental health treatments, the expense of therapy often prevents people from seeking help. Many people are unable to seek assistance due to a lack of financial means. Others may be subjected to treatment that is inconsistent or inadequate due to a lack of financial resources.
Mental health treatments, even with insurance or financial support, can be costly, as copays and deductibles add up quickly.
Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Mental Healthcare Access
There are significant disparities in mental healthcare access among different racial and ethnic groups. One study examines the influence of the Affordable Care Act on mental health care access. White Americans are the only racial group in whom the majority of those suffering from severe mental distress receive therapy, according to the findings of the study. More than half of Black, Latinx, and Asian clients with severe mental illness do not receive care.
Addressing Clinician Bias and Cultural Competency in Mental Healthcare
According to research, clinicians sometimes discriminate against people of color, refusing to accept them more frequently. People of color are also less inclined to seek mental health treatment if they believe their clinician does not understand or empathize with their background or cultural differences.
Hygieia Behavioral Health Foundation aims to mitigate these barriers and your donations can help! See Funding for more information.
